Using MM2 V2.1 service pack 2

I am using a Canapus capture device to get analog video into my computer.

I want to make a move to show with a computer projector on a large screen.

When I capture video I normally select BEst quality for this computer.

In Clips window video looks good and sharp, but when I drag it to the
timeline and look at the video full screen there is a fair amout of loss in
quality.

I then tried capturing my video clips using a higher setting ( Other ) such
as 640 X 480 and 720 X 480 which makes the clips very large. However, after
dragging to timeline still quite a loss in quality .

I thought, well maybe for purposes of putting movie together there was a
loss of quality for editing purposes only... saved movie.... and still loos
of quality.

Any help would be appreciated.... and be specific ....... assume I know
very little, so explain as much as possible.

I enjoy working with MM2 just hope that I can improve the output some.
Thanks.

Thanks in advance for any help..

Hi Milo;
First thing to check is the limits of your Canapus device.
It may not be able to capture video at a high resolution.
I got pinched by this same thing. I have a device from another manufacturer
that I bought because the price was right, and I only wanted to get analog
video out of my camcorder. It can only capture at a max of 320X240. Now WMM
will allow me to specify a 720X480 capture resolution, but the device cannot
deliver that, so I end up with a large file with poor resolution, like you
are getting.
Thankfully, I am getting a new device for Christmas that can capture at full
NTSC 720X480 @ 30FPS.

Check the specs on your capture device and let us know;

Let me explain further......

The video quality that I get inputing the video with my Canapus device is
adequaate.... at 320 by 240 pixels... When I preview the clips they look
good enough for what I want... but when I drag them to the timeline and then
view the time line in full screen... the resolution or sharpness is
poor...... I want what I see when I preview a clip to be what I get in the
final movie...

Thanks..

Hi Milo;
I just looked at some 720x480 that I got off of my DV camera.
I have burned this to SVCD and the quality is quite good on my TV. However,
when I look at the clip with a full screen preview of the timeline, it is
quite noisy as well.
I checked the default resolution of the Preview Window, and it is set at
320x240. When you view that at full screen, you are in essence magnifying
that video, and that is why the noise is present.
When you take that, and factor in the resolution you are currently running
your monitor at, you could be gettin significant magnification. I run this
monitor at SXGA 1280x1024, so that is a 4x magnification on this screen. When
I burn 320x240 video to a SVCD and try to view it on a TV, it is pixellated
and it just does not look good.

In reality, you need at least 640x480 to have a decent image on anything
larger than a window on a PC screen.

I just do not think that 320x240 is enough to get done what you are trying
to accomplish.
Have a look at this page:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/capture/software-resolution.htm
They have a good guide on what resolutions you should be considering for
what you want the outcome to be.

Hope that helps
Jeff
