I got my son a new computer for his birthday but the video card that it has
will not play some of the games he like.
I got a better card for it and I'am ready to install it. what i needc to
know is should I disable the old one or should i uninstall it.
thanks ........Richard

Uninstall the old card. If you are asked to reboot select
No and shut down the pc manually. Install the new card,
boot up and install the drivers. Cheers.

You should uninstall it. Open Control Panel, open System, go to the
Hardware tab, click Device Manager, click the plus sign next to Display
Adapter, select the current card, right click and select uninstall.

Now, shutdown the computer, remove the old card, insert the new card, then
boot the system. While it will likely find drivers for the card on its own,
after the installation is complete, it's best to visit the device
manufacturer's web site and check for the latest drivers for the card.

Do not assume the drivers in the box are the latest just because the card is
new. Quite often, in the box drivers are outdated by the time the card is
sold due to time at the manufacturer's warehouse, time in transit, time to a
wholesaler, time in the retailers warehouse before the product ever hits the
shelves.

Richard, if your son's computer came with integrated graphics ( part of
the Motherboard ) you should disable it in the
Bios. If it's a AGP or PCI Slot Card then replace with the new one.

If the new card is an AGP card, the AGP slot is closest to
the CPU and set back a little, it is reddish/brown,
installing an AGP card will usually automatically be
detected and the on-board video will be disabled.

You can check this by looking at your computer manual or the
motherboard manual. If you don't know what motherboard your
computer actually has, download the Bel Arc Advisor from
www.belarc.com It will report the make and model (even the
serial number) of the motherboard. You can then go to the
mobo makers website and download the manual the OEM didn't
supply. (There may be some modifications on an OEM mobo
compared to a retail).
