Hello,

I have an old computer I would like to upgrade.
I had it for over 4 years. Works fine, but it is getting slow.

My quetion is: Can I just upgrade the mother board/CPU/RAM. I was
thinking about getting today this one: ($74 for everything) here is the
link:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?...
Biostar Geforce 6100-M9 NVIDIA Socket 939 MicroATX Motherboard with an
AMD Sempron 3000 1.80GHz OEM CPU & 512MB DDR PC3200
Would it work with it if that is the only thing I change.
Anything special I need to know? I think know how to change the
motheboard. But anything else beside that?
I would like to keep the cost minimal. Also I can always later upgrade
just the CPU to AMD X2 or AMD FX.

Thanks,

Iren

I recently just upgraded my Athlon XP 1700+ system. It ran like a champ
for years.

I upgraded to an :

CPU: Athlon 64 FX-55
MoBo: Asus A8N-E
RAM: HyperX pc3200 512Mb
Video: nVidia GeForce 6600 256Mb
Hard Drive: Seagate 160Gb SATA

I personally am not a big fan of Biostar MoBos.
I had one crap out on me once.

I'm a big fan of Abit and Asus motherboards

But you did say your were on a budget.
Try these computer ware websites- For integrated video MoBos (motherboards)

I don't think what you propose will be much of an upgrade. The link to
Tigerdirect was broken however most of their specials involve a large
rebate. I don't like rebates. Also make sure your power supply has the
four pin connector that plugs into the motherboard. If it doesn't then
you will need a new power supply.

Here is an example of a no rebate bundle at Newegg:

http://promotions.newegg.com/amd/amd_bundle/index.html

You would need ram but you could use your single stick for starters
and still have a much faster system.

It is eMachine T1600:

<snip>

The mb you suggested is not that much faster than your
current config. More ram and a faster video card may
do wonders for your response times if the computer
is feeling a little sluggish. Also cleaning it out or reloading
it from scratch may also fix a bunch of ills. The OEM
copy of Windows will tecnically be illegal on your new
system config. Worst case, it may not even work on
your new mb so you would have to buy/borrow/steal
another copy. If you stay legal, that will be another
expense. Of course you could switch to Linux.

later,
charles.......
