I need to upgrade my old p3 500 computer. Now, since this is my real first
time upgrade main parts, meaning cpu and motherboard and power supply. I
need a little help with procedure. I won't be replace all my components as
they are pretty good, such as: 80 gig hd and GForce 4 Ti 4800, and cd drive
works fine. The products I am considering as Abit NF7-S for the mother
board, AMD 2500+, 512 pc2700 DDR Ram,and Thermaltake Silent Purepower 480W.
Now, for the upgrade. Is it essentially a swap out, swap in mentality? And
do I have to reinstall Win XP, after the upgrade?

Thanks in advance for the help

I recently upgraded a similar system (p3 850) to a P4 2.8 with new mobo, mem
and PSU. I had to re-install Windows XP immediately. I heard that repairing
the installation may have worked to get my system back but I figured a clean
install was for the best. Probably a good idea to be ready for a re-install.

You'll be making massive changes to the hardware, at least that's what
WinXP will see. It won't boot. You can get around this, though, as I
have when I did a similar procedure. First, backup all your important
data. If things don't work out, you'll be having to do a
reformat/reinstall. Second, swap your hardware. I assume you know how
to do this and set everything up. Take your time, make sure all the
connectors are around the right way, and take static precautions. Make
sure you have any FSB jumpers that the motherboard might have set
correctly. Third, boot the system and fix any settings in the BIOS,
such as making the cdrom the first boot device. Do not try and boot into
windows. Finally, put the winxp cdrom in your cdrom drive and boot into
it. Go through the procedure to INSTALL windows, not to the command
prompt repair console. Windows will detect a previous installation and
eventually ask you if you want to reinstall windows or something
similar. You then wait for it to sort itself out. This is exactly what
I did with my wife's computer.

The only problem I see with this is that everytime I've gone to install XP
over itself Windows says that all my settings will be knocked out and I'll
have to reinstall all my programs to have them work.
By chance is there another direction one should go to simply 'repair'
Windows so that it will accept the new hardware and leave the software
intact?

Not in my experience.

try removing all the device drivers that have anything to do with the
motherboard before shutting down the computer. Then, when it boots back
up (if it does) you'll be able to install the drivers from the cdroms
that came with the motherboard. This is actually something I wish I had
tried, as it would have been heaps faster.

Yes.

Whilst initializing the install of XP, from the CD, it will detect the other
installation. It will ask you if you wish to 'repair' it.

Will that take you to the fairly useless repair console mode?

And... the repair console is not useless, for those that know how to use it.
In fact, it can save your ass.

Then that's probably the reinstall/repair deal that I did and was
speaking about in my post :-)
