Help with updates

I been trying to update a few things because I just got a new computer with
XP on it and when I got to a few sites to update it takes forever and and
then the page is gray and can't update I've been to nero, visioneer are just
two of them what can I do.
 
Could it be the fire wall in XP I did a google search for downloads and
still get the same gray pages and takes forever to get that.
