I've got a definite noob question. How do i clean out my system tray?
There are way too many things turning themselves on at start up. I
can't find an option in most of them to turn that off so I have to
manually stop them after the pc boots up. Its starting to irk me. I
know its probably very easy to fix but I'm a bit flustered right now.

just run msconfig and take unneeded apps out of startup

as above, just uncheck the items you don't want. There are utilities and
websites around that explain what most of the start up items are, and what
programs use them - since you don't want to turn something off that is a
required system function (like 'explorer.exe' the Windows system shell) or
others such as your firewall or AV software or something that are logical to
be started at boot-time. I agree - other stuff like quicktime loading its
quick-access icons or whatever are not necessary.

Google for "start up items" or "ms config items" and you'll find a range of
sites and utilities to identify these programs.
eg:

Right click some of the icons and check their "options" or "settings" or
"preferences" etc. Many items have options to turn off or disable items from
launching at startup. You can also check the Programs->Startup folder. You
can delete items that are in the Startup folder to prevent them from
launching at startup. There is also a nice little freebie called Startup
Control Panel found here http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml which works
very well.

Amen, Harry. I have installed Mike's Start Up Control Panel on several
machines and would strongly recommend it.
