Real Newbie, here is my system:
-Cable modem 2000kb/s down, 400kb/s down
-SMC7004VWBR wireless router
(Part No. 750.9821_Firmware v1.00.012 (WPA))
-MSI 845GL desktop pc running XP pro(with HP845c deskjet printer-USB)
-Acer 291LMi notebook with wlan running XP home.
Both machines connect to the internet and can use IE without any
problems.

I have 2 questions:

1. How can I share the printer, so that I can print from my notebook?
I have shared the printer on my desktop pc as "hpdeskjet". The deskto
pc and and the notebook are both on the same workgroup JMP-HOME. Using
"my network places",I just can't see the other machine.
can anyone help?

2.Any way of preventing the router from dropping my ftp?
Ftp upload cuts out after exactly 5mins, while on download its
variable. I get a "426 data connection closed"message. Sometimes the
connection restablishes, sometimes not.

thanks in advance!

Well, you should be able to "see" the desktop from your laptop if the
network is working properly. That would be your first priority. Then
you have to enable print sharing on your desktop computer. Then you
have to enable print sharing on the printer. Then you have to install
the printer software on the laptop and in the process direct the
laptop to print to the printer on the desktop.

I print to an Epson printer connected to a desktop, parallel port from
two laptops using wireless NICs in the laptops. When I look at
"Printers" on the laptops, I see the Epson printer, and in properties,
details I see a window that says "Print using the following driver:"
and the Epson printer is listed in the window. And in a window that
says "Print to the following port:" there is an entry \\<my desktop
computer name>\<my printer name>.

Unfortunately I cant see my desktop from the laptop pc, although both
are on workgroup JMP-HOME. That'suprising since I can VNC from the
desktop->laptop and vice-versa!
I'll keep on digging,
many thanks for the reply
