help with shutdown

after replacing the hard drive and loading windows xp i am
required to hold the off button for approximately 5
seconds after the screen displays the messege 'it is now
safe to turn off your computer' to shut the computer down.
prior to replacing the hard drive the computer would
shutdown automatically without the need for pressing the
off button.
what can i do to activate an auto shutdown rather than
holding the power button?
