Help with sharing folders over the network

Please help
I Have 4 computers with xp pro on, all on a network.
Ie computer 1/user1
computer2/user2
etc

On computer 1 I want to create various folders for each user to access
over the network. When I try to do this, every user can see the shared
folders.
I want to have it so that each user, is allowed to view only certain
folders, I though it would be as simple as haveing a password for each
folder, but XP wont let me do this.
Can anyone help?

First, you need to turn off "simple file sharing" in folder options.
Then, right-click "My Computer" on the desktop and select "Manage".
Create user accounts for the other users that exactly match the accounts
on their computers - that is the exact same username and password. Then
right-click each of the folders you want to share, select "Properties"
and do one of two things:

1)If you have a "Security" tab (you should, most XP installations are on
an NTFS filesystem) go to the "Sharing" tab and select "Share this
Folder". Give it a share name or just accept the default. Click the
"Permissions" button and make sure "Read", "Change" and "Full Control"
are selected. Then go to the "Security" tab and specifically add the
user you want to have access. If they are to be able to read and write
to this share, check all of the permit boxes except "Full Control".
Remove "Everyone", "Users", etc. from the list (Do not remove
"Administrators".

2) If you DON'T have a security tab, set the permissions in the share
permissions.

Method 1 is better because it grants or denies access to those shares at
the file level - even if the user logs on to the computer directly.
Method 2 only controls access from the network.


In NT, (WIndows NT, 2000, XP, Vista) permissions are applied to users,
not shares as in win98. Google for some articles on "User level"
permissions vs "Share level" permissions.
