HI all,

Excuse my idiocy, but I'm banging my head on this one. I have a
Satellite dish for the net, (we live in the sticks of the desert), and
the 1394 and Lan lines are both showing as connected. But, when I try to
use the net, I get an error message stating my TCP can't be found or
some such.
I've checked a dozen times or so, and both 1394 and Ethernet Lan ports
are listing TCP-IP protocols. They both worked fine until about a week
ago and there haven't been any changes.. I even did a system restore. Help??

If you go to start>run>cmd and in commad winodw type "ipconfig" and
then hit enter what info does it give you?

The command window appears, and then disappears as quickly.I can barely
read it because it simply flashes and closes.

All the errors seem to be IP related.. Is there another way to reset the IP?

I'm also checking that MS page the other fellow pointed out, (thanks)

Do it the way that Jay suggests: Start> Run and type in cmd
That series of actions will bring up a command prompt window that will stay
in view when you run ipconfig. It sounds like you are running ipconfig
right from Start> Run and that will cause the behavior that you describe.

Thanks! I got through. It worked temporarily then died on me again... I
checked for spyware, and malware,so I'm sure it's something I must be
doing. Any ideas?

No ideas. Rick gave you the link to the article for troubleshooting TCP/IP
issues. It's pretty thorough. One tool that I like even though it's still
beta is the LSP section of Windows Defender. It will list the various LSP
versions on your system (helps in tracking down any that are troublesome)
and it can restore the default LSP.

NOTE: Some ISP software has been known to use their own LSP instead of the
default in Windows. Resetting to default can cause the one from the ISP to
fail. Check with ISP for more info if this is a concern.

Also check the system thoroughly for malware. These have also been known to
replace the default LSP.

A basic: Power down and unplug everything from the internet: modem, router,
computer. Turn on modem. When it indicates ready. Connect and start router.
When that's ready. Connect computer and power up.

A wild stab: Try static IPs on your internal network if dynamic ones are
not working well for you.

Thanks Sharon...very good plans. I did find that putting static IPs
worked better, and it's so far, not exploding for the first time all week.

You're welcome, CJ. I'm glad that suggestion is working for you.
