the scanner BEFORE running the drivers..

Mike,

Thanks for the info. I've actually done this twice now. Once on my own,
and once following these instructions from the scanner support folks, and
still it doesn't work:

Please follow the steps below to do a clean installation of your scanner.

The first thing we need to do is remove any files that have been installed
and start with a fresh installation.

1) RIGHT-CLICK on the MY COMPUTER icon and click on PROPERTIES.

2) Select the HARDWARE tab, then the DEVICE MANAGER button.

3) Remove the Epson Scanner from under IMAGING DEVICE and/or UNKNOWN and/or
OTHER DEVICES by RIGHT-CLICKING on it and clicking UNINSTALL.

4) Disconnect the USB cable and close all open windows.

5) Click on START, and CONTROL PANELS.

6) Double-click on ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS. Highlight EPSON SCAN and click on
CHANGE/REMOVE.

7) Restart your computer.

DOWNLOAD

Please follow the steps below to download and install your scanner in XP:

1. Go to the website http://support.epson.com 2. Under the SCANNERS heading
select PERFECTION SERIES and then your scanner model.

3. Under the Drivers & Downloads section select Windows. Download the most
current version of the Scanner Driver for your Windows operating system to
your DESKTOP.

Reinstall

1) Double Click on the Epson1****.exe file that you downloaded to your
DESKTOP.

2) Click OK, Unzip, and then OK again.

3) The installer will copy the files to the system. Click on FINISH when
prompted.

4) Connect the USB cable. Windows will tell you new hardware is found and
complete the install.

5) If a message appears indicating THE SCANNER HAS NOT PASSED WINDOWS LOGO
TESTING, click CONTINUE ANYWAY. Then click FINISH.

6) Your scanner is now ready to use.

What brand and model scanner are you using? Do you have the XP drivers for
it?
In the device manager, is anything showing in "Other"? Is the scanner
showing in the "Imaging devices"?

I just put together a new box and can't seem to get my scanner to work on
it. It just keeps telling me "cannot communicate with scanner". At first I
thought it was the scanner itself, so I went out and got another one. After
installing the drivers and software and then plugging it in, I got the same
thing with the new one. It's getting power, and the USB port works fine
because I've switched other hardware to it, and they all work fine--only the
scanner doesn't. I unintalled it, downloaded the latest drivers off the
support website, and reinstalled it, and same thing. So, other than the
power source, drivers, and USB port, what could possibly prevent the system
from communicating with it, or vice versa? I took the old scanner to
another box in the house, and it works fine; so again what could possibly be
the problem.

Thanks,
Bob

Sometimes by installing the correct, and up to date, chipset drivers may help
you with USB port access problems.

It's an Epson Perfection Series 3590, and it shows up in Imaging Devices.
I downloaded the latest WindowsXP drivers for it directly from Epson's
support site.

Nothing but scanning equipment is having a problem though....I've plugged a
printer into it, and it works fine. Would that matter, if it's just the
scanner that's not working?

had similar problem with lexmark all in one, printer part worked but scanner
didn't in xp home, in my pro and 2000 machine it all worked fine, just not
in home, I just figured home don't support it and didn't use it for that
machine.
though my home was OEM that came with machine and not full retail so that
explains it.

Interesting -- by coincidence I had the same issue with a new Epson
Perfection scanner. The advice worked for me!

Question: Why is it important to NOT have the scanner connected until
AFTER the software/driver is installed?

When the driver is installed, when the device is plugged in for the first
time, the computer will be able to match up the driver to the device...

When the driver is not installed, when the device is plugged in for the
first time, the computer doesn't have a driver to match up to the device..
as a result, even if you feed it drivers after the fact, they don't get
matched up with the device in question. In theory, it should work, but in
practice, other factors may end up interfering with the process.

To ensure that the right drivers get matched up with the hardware, that's
why it is often advisable to install the drivers first, so when you plug the
device in for the first time, it should just work.
