My XP (/sp3) computer has been running flawlessly for the last few years.
Suddenly I got the following runtime error this morning when I turned on the
computer..

********************
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Run time error:

Program : c:\Prog....

This application has requested the run time to terminate it in an unusual
way,
Please contact blah. blah,
*******************
Could someone advise me how to fix this problem?
TIA. Jorge

Is this the full error message, quoted exactly?

"Run time error:
Program : c:\Prog...."

If not, please provide the full path of the c:\Prog... bit.

If that is the full error message, you'll need to figure out what is
starting with Windows and failing by doing startup troubleshooting.

Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab and
find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and OK
out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll
get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box that says in
effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop processes.
Instead, use Start>Run>services.msc [enter] and do not stop any services
unless you really, really know what you're doing.

It seems that Nitro PDF Pro was the culprit. When rebooted, I no longer see
the runtime error.
But the windows now appears to be mis-configured. I got to reinstall
Windows.
Is there anyway to avoid the windows installaiton. It is a pain.

So what did you install recently? Some programs require the C runtime
files be installed. Proper installation would have them check what are
the current versions of those files and only replace them if the ones
included in the installation were newer; however, some installs don't do
the check and just dump the files on the host with the result that you
get a mash of incompatible versions rather than the unified set of them.

It is so unlikely that the error message was EXACTLY as shown above that
you obviously didn't take the time to write it down although apparently
it is a reproducible failure. Or is it reproducible? Did you reboot a
few more times and get the same error?

Take a look in the Event Viewer. If the error is noted there, you can
click on the Copy icon (looks like a doubled page image) when you open
the item. You then paste the report here. That's not guaranteed to
show the failing component. When you get the error popup, sometimes it
offers you a technical report where you can trace back through each
component that was involved to find a likely candidate as the culprit.

Since this error occurs when you startup Windows (and after logging in),
you can use SysInternal's AutoRuns to check all the startup items.
First just reboot into Windows' Safe Mode to see if the error still
occurs, or if it only occurs when you boot into normal mode.

"appears to be mis-configured"

Is it your intent to be overly obtuse?

--- Posting Hints ---

ALWAYS REVIEW your message before submitting it. You want someone OTHER
than yourself to understand your post. Also remember that no one here
is looking over your shoulder to see at what you are pointing.

Often you get just one chance per potential respondent to elicit a reply
from them. If they skip your post because you gave them nothing to go
on (no details, no versions, no OS, no context) then they will usually
move on to the next post and never return to yours.

Regarding error messages:
- Do NOT describe an error message.
- Do NOT summarize an error message.
- Do NOT paraphrase an error message.
- Do NOT truncate an error message.
- Do show the ENTIRE message (but munge/star out personal info,
like your username).

Again, after unchecking Nitro PDF Pro, run time error was gone after
booting.
But none of program was working. Even unintalling Nitro PDF Pro did not
work.
Now, I am re-installing Windows.
Thanks. Jorge

Jorge,
......inevitably when Windows is installed then updated DirectX needs to be
manually updated at Microsoft.com.
That could be what the nitro applicaton was needing. I am only guessing but
after finding DirectX used to but does not now update automatically through
Microsoft online Windows Update I was thrilled to see large updates to
DirectX after running the DirectX update application and improvements in
graphics on my computer.
