Gramps

I thought I had it together technically, but now I'm at a loss.

I installed two round ATA 133 cables on my new dual AMD 5600 system.
Both cables work fine on my old AMD Thunderbird system and both
motherboards are Asus. The setup was the same on both systems, drive 1
is a Seagate hard drive and drive 2 is a DVD writer on both cables.

When I place a DVD or CD in the drive the screen goes to horizontal
multi-colored boxes until rebooted. When I replace the round cable
with flat ribbon ATA 133 cable the DVD drive on the ribbon cable works
and the other fails. Replacing both round cables seems to fix all.

Swap either round back and the problem returns.

If someone has an answer, please forward it. I like the air flow with
the round cables, but colored squares don't make it.

New System:
Asus M2NBP-VM CSM
5600 dual processor AMD 64
4 Gig 800 RAM (with and without the /3GB switch)
ATA port 1 Primary = 150 G seagate 133, secondary = HP 20x DVD
ATA port 2 Primary = 300 G seagate 133, secondary = Lite-on 18x DVD
three SATA 400 Gig Seagate drives
800 W powersupply
Windowz XP SP2 (SP3 would not load onboard audio)
Using onboard video

Thanks in advance,
G

I'd say you have two bad round cables that are leaking EMF noise that
your new setup is susceptable to where your old one wasn't.

Are these cheapo round cables, or better shielded ones like these:

round cables are GARBAGE
it maybe your power supply is rather 'dirty' in its signal and the cables are absorbing
the chaos

Thanks, I'll bring a scope home and check it.

I thought maybe it was the combo of HD and DVD writer rather then
putting two of the same on each ATA port.

I guess I have to agree with the garbage thought.

Thanks,
G
