Hi, I don't know much about computers, but I had some more ram memory (i think that's what it is called!) installed by a professional and I had 512mb. But now my computer is messing up very bad, I keep getting those balloon messages saying I have about 4mb of disk space on the c drive, so i've deleted loads, about 800mb worth of programmes and loads of documents, i haven't installed anything else, but i am back down to 16mb on my hard drive. I can't even defrag my comp cos there isn't enough memory for it to perform. I've done virus scans, adware scans, spyware scans. I've cleaned the registry. And then just now I went in to the system thingy ma bob and it says i only have 256mb ram. What is going on?

Thanks

May be your ram was 256 mb and was doubled to 512 mb,one of the sticks of ram may have failed or not be seated properly?it is easy enough to check that by takeing the case side off and haveing a look and makeing sure both are pressed home firmly(turn power off at socket but leave pluged in and discharge static by touching a radiator or such like and your computer case),if you had the upgrade recently they should sort that out for you.About your hard drive have you confused mb with gb it seems a bit strange to have 16 mb of space more likely to be gb?
I'm no expert on these things but if this doesn't help there are plenty of people on here that will help you,all the best.

Non of us are, but you hit the nail on the head.

mozmom, go back to your "profesional" and ask them to check the RAM for you, you DO have a 12 months warantee ... always leave at least a quarter of a HD for free space, if you can't, invest in a bigger HD ;)

thanks guys, i've compressed the disk, deleted a load etc and ended up now with 3,800mb. It was definitely 16mb which was why i was so worried. I'll have a look and see if the ram stick has come loose, then if that isn't the problem I shall take it back to the guy who did it for me. Again, many thanks for your help. :)

thanks, you couldn't give me a bit of information on how to use that programme could you?

You need to download it and then make a bootable cd-rom or floppy and then boot from it.

To boot you need to go into Setup when you start your computer or selet boot menu if you have that option and change the first boot device in advanced CMOS settings to your cd-rom drive.
