All That You Touch

Ive just installed a RAID card in my PC with 2 new 200gig drives, have gone
into the RAID bios and configured them to be striped, and it accepts and
displays this is the case however when i boot up the PC i cant see the
drives in My Compuer, how do i format the drives?

cheers for any info

Hi,

The first method I would take to this is to go into Control Panel, and
to Administrative Tools, Then to Computer Management, and finally Disk
Management. The drives should be listed there, where you should be able to
right click on each one and format them.

You need to install the drivers for that RAID card....

HI
Thanks for the replies guys, the drivers are already installed for the card.

Re: formatting them through the Computer management, should this be done
BEFORE i set up the stripe drives in the RAID bios ? as ive just gone to do
it and the 2 drives are listed as one but it says Unallocated and unknown
below where it says Disc 0

I'm sorry, but I'm ignorant to tell you what would be done first. I've only
set up one RAID array and that was "0", and done through the bios rather
than through Windows. Do you have any documentation from the mb? I would
imagine it could get a little tricky and from what I remember using SATA
drives that are not native to the mb they would sometimes translate in the
bios as SCSI hdds either for using as the boot drive or to create a RAID
array.

You set up the array in the RAID bios which will produce a single
logical drive of 400 Gb. This needs to be partitiomed and formatted under
WinXP with the drive Manager. Windows does not know about the array, it just
sees the resulting 400Gb drive.

Assuming you are ADDING a drive to the system, and the boot drive shows up
properly in Disk Manager...

You HAVE TO set up the RAID BIOS first. Setting up or resetting the RAID
array will effectively undo (logically speaking) anything you do in Disk
Manager.

"Unallocated and unknown" refers to 'not partitioned and not formatted'.
You should only have to select the drive, right-click to get to the Partition
menu, then partition and format as desired.

If you are REPLACING your boot drive, copy the RAID drivers to floppy,
disconnect your current boot drive, set up the RAID array in the RAID BIOS, then
boot with the Windows installation CD. Hit F6 for the drivers when prompted,
and use the partition/format menus on the installation screens. Re-connect the
old drive when done installing Windows.
