Paul.

I wanted to give an old PC to a neighbour but I am struggling to reinstall
Win 2000.

Firstly, there is a password to get into the BIOS that we cant remember. Is
there a way to get round this or at least reset it?

Next, when I try to install Win 2000 it will not let me delete the current
partition and cant see an option to reformat the disk.

Any idea's would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

If you are running the install from within windows then you won't be allowed
to delete the current partition as it is in use. You need to boot from the
windows cd which you won't be able to do as you can't get in the BIOS , or
make some windows 2000 boot floppies which you can Google for instructions.

Thanks Alex.

Will the boot floppies allow me to see the CD drive?

You should have a jumper near the CMOS chip or battery
that you can set or remove, sepending on the motherboard,
that will reset your CMOS settings to the factory
defaults. This should clear any password.

You will most likely have to have a SomeNameHere.SYS file loaded in
the config.sys (somenamehere is to be replaced by a real name of the
device driver supplied by your cd rom maker) and mscdex.exe (I think
that is the name of the file) supplied by Microsoft in the autoexec

The appropriate SYS file is the HARDWARE driver, from the cd maker, to
then pass commands to the SOFTWARE mscdex program from Microsoft which
acts as a translation layer between Windows and the cd
