My Hp media center addition machine crashed and I lost the recovery partition. Now I cannot reinstall the operating system. So I called HP and they sent me recovery disks. I used the recovery disks and the reinstall failed in the same way.

Now onto the problem. I have 2 hard drives on the machine C: which is 160 and and an E: drive which is 160. I have since bought a new computer XP Professional. How can I get the data off of the E drive onto the XP Professional machine? I tried hooking up the drive to the new machine but it is recgonized as foreign and wanted me to format it. I tried putting it in a XP home machine and it recgonized the drive but also said it needed to be formatted. I cannot afford to lose this data.

The data on the E: drive should be fine but I cannot get an operating system to get the data off of it. What do I do

try going into the recovery console and copying all the
data one file or one directory at a time into a preset
folder on the good drive with the command copy [root]
[destination]

Have you tried the settings and files transfer wizard? start\all programs\accessories\system tools\files and settings transfer wizard. Activate it and follow the on screen prompts. When asked if you want to create a wizard disk just put a dot in "I don't need----" then select the " other" down the bottom and then click the browse button and point it to the e: drive. Good luck.
