I have two computers sharing a DSL connection through a
wireless router. Both run MSXP Home Edition.

Both computers are accessing the internet, both can ping
each other. I have set each up for file & printer
sharing.

Computer A can see Computer B in My next work places and
can see the name of the shared files, but cannot access
the files and cannot access the printers. When I double
click a Computer B shared folder, I get the following
Error:

"<shared folder> is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network source. Contact the
administrator for this server to find out if you have
access permission.

The network path was not found."

Computer B however can see and access coimputers A's
files & printers.

I should add that I set everything up through XP's
network wizard and I have disabled the XP firewall on
each computer's network connection.

In addition, this was working yesterday but I did
maintenance on computer A last night (reloaded Norton
System Works and McAfee Personal Firewall 8.0).

On MPF 8.0, I set the firewall for "trusting security"

Both computers get their IP address automatically with
DHCP and they can both ping each other anbd the router
and they can both access the shared internet.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

PCC

Greetings Pete,

Make sure McAfee Firewall isn't blocking access between the computers.
Disable XP's firewall on local area networks. It is only intended for direct
connections to the Internet. If that doesn't work, then completely remove
all firewall programs while troubleshooting.

If Eric's firewall suggestions don't solve the problem, try these:

1. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on both computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/netbt.htm

2. Run "ipconfig /all" on both computers and look at the "Node Type"
at the beginning of the output. If it says "Peer-to-Peer" (which
should actually be "Point-to-Point") that's the problem. It means
that the computer only uses a WINS server, which isn't available on a
peer-to-peer network for NetBIOS name resolution.

If that's the case, run the registry editor, open this key:

HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters

and delete these values if they're present:

NodeType
DhcpNodeType

Reboot, then try network access again.

If that doesn't fix it, open that registry key again, create a DWORD
value called "NodeType", and set it to 1 for "Broadcast" or 4 for
"Mixed".
