I was woring along in another application when I received a dialoge box with
a status bar that stated Clean up was compacting vaiouse folders in Outlook.
After this completed I tried later today to retieive messages from my
Outlook. My inbox, deleted,a nd spam folders where all empty. I tried calling
Norton, It's like talking to a wall. They could not understand what I was
tryting to say, so I gave up. Is there any feature in Outlook that compacts
the folders in outlook express. I don't think this is some kind of virus,
just did a scann last PM. I really think it was nortons, but I look at
Outlook express, and it looks like it has a mial feature called clean up. Is
this possible. Really need to get them back. Thanks in advance.

Outlook Express

Norton and McAfee do not play well with Outlook Express.

In OE go to Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder and write down the
location where OE is storing it's data. Go there with Windows Explorer
(with Win2K and WinXP you will have to set Windows Explorer to show hidden
files and folders (Tools | Folder Options | View).

What DBX and DBT files are there and what are their sizes?

I did that and the DXB file for inbox is only about 256K. I tried to import
from here but it stated it was in use. I think beacuse I had Outlook Express
open, this was the size of my inbox now after it had been compacted.

At 256 KB it doesn't have very many messages, but DBXtract should be able to
extract them:
DBXtract ($5): http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx
There is also a free alternative to DBXtract, though not for DBXpress:
http://www.insideoe.com/resources/tools.htm#macallan
but I've never tried it.
