I am trying to help another person use an old PC running
Windows2000 with FAT32. It has all the latest window updates when I
logon to Microsoft. He has no documentation or software support for
this PC other than what is already installed. He has zero computer
knowledge other than point and click. I am not familiar with Windows
2000 at all. I am using Windowsxp home but have never really
understood setting up and modifying user accounts. I only have one.

Here is the problem:

When PC starts the logon window opens but then an error
message come up saying there is something wrong with ID/password. I
close the error windows and the ID in the logon window lists "W & D"
but what is needed is just "W". If I manually type in the correct ID
and hit enter (no password was ever set) the PC starts normally.
There is a user account called W who has administrator priviliges.
When I look at right click on my computer I see the computer is
registered to "W & D" which makes me think this is somehow connected.

Any suggestions on how to make the logon come up with the
correct "W" or set up another account that will come up right?

Person does not really need any accounts because he is the
only one using the PC and he will never use 98% of it so is it
possible to just have the PC boot directly with no logon or at least
to come up with correct information so he can just hit enter?
email response not expected but to respond remove .uk at end
TIA
Hank

You can run regedit.exe and navigate to;
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
edit the Reg_Sz string values
"DefaultUserName"
and
"DefaultPassword"
to reflect the correct username and password. (note: the password for an
autologon account can not be blank)

Want to thanks the two people that responded. I was able to use
regedit to fix the problem. I think what happened is there was a
password associated at one time but got tanked somehow. I just
changed the default user to "W" not "W & D" then I changed or I should
say added a password for W. Boot cycle is clean & automatic. Now if I
could just get my modem problems fixed. That is on another newsgroup.
Thanks again for the help.
