Hi,

I set up a LMHOSTS file on my domain server running wins, dns, dhcp.

I can ping the entries in the LMHOSTS file by name on the server, but on
workstations with dinamic IP's I can't ping by name.

How can I make this work?

Thanks!!!
Dave

The host file must be on all pc's..... it's only good for
what machine it is on. You need to set up reverse lookup
on you dns server.

Please explain: What's the use running WINS, DNS *and* LMHOSTS in an
DHCP environment?
What's the concept behind this mess?

Ciao, Walter

DHCP is for assigning IP's to workstations.
DNS is for XP machines loging into the domain server.
WINS is for name recognition over subnets.
LMHOSTS is for name recognition over the VPN.

Why is it a mess?

Ok, I can do this, but what am I reverse looking up?

Any examples of how to do this?

Thanks!!!

Do you have downlevel clients (win9x, NT) in your AD? If not:
WINS is not needed anymore. AD clients are using DNS to locate the
nearest GC server (Global Catalog) and are using LDAP queries to
locate their DCs.
You may want to get rid of LMHOSTS and use DNS for your VPN
connections instead.

Voila: WINS and LMHOSTS are obsolete.

Your configuration is called a mess because it's a mix between server
based and client based repositories for IP settings. The settings may
vary in those repositories. Therefore you are forced to check all
settings in case of errors.

Ok, got it to work.

Renamed my LMHOSTS file to something else and moved to the desktop(or
anywhere). Imported the renamed LMHOSTS file into WINS as static entries.
Works on all workstations now.

How do I set up my DNS to see names of computers on a domain accross a VPN
or subnet?

This is the main reason I set up WINS.
