How to IMPORT a large MPG file?

In MM, I did :
File / Import into Collection
and
after 4 hours job still not done.
(not imported)

The file type is MPG
The file is about 23 Gb
(23,140,602,863 bytes)

Why import this size?
To remove unwanted parts.

Background:
Window XP Professional SP3
Windows Movie Maker 2.1.4026.0
4 Gb RAM on motherboard

Source: Television, free to air
Hardware: Plug in card, Hauppauge
Software: Win TV 6
Record button was left ON for many hours
resulting in a 23 Gb MPG

It's not uncommon for Movie Maker to have
issues with .mpg files...

I'm thinking it would be worth a try to convert the
..mpg file to the .wmv format before importing.

I would also suggest that you disable your
connection to the net and close all programs
(especially virus scanners) before working
with a file this large.

The following freeware can do the conversion:

(FWIW...it's always a good idea to create a System
Restore point before installing software or updates)

Format Factory
http://www.pcfreetime.com/
(FWIW...you may want to uncheck
all the boxes on the final screen)

After downloading and installing Format Factory...
open the program and choose an Output Folder...
(this is where you will find your files after they are
converted)

Drag/drop your ..mpg file onto the main screen...

Select 'All to WMV' / OK...

Click...Start...on the toolbar...

That should do it...

Good Luck...

Hello John and Thanks for posting above.
Hear we go...

The Format Factory coversion ratio was 1.2
1 MPG bytes = 1.2 WMV bytes

Exactly:
23,140,602,863 bytes .mpg
28,037,430,551 bytes .wmv

Now when Importing 28 GB .wmv into Movie Maker
the result is 19 parts:
Parts 1 to 18 are 3 seconds to 42 seconds
Part 19 is over 4 hours

How come it split into 19 parts?

The idea is to find a simple to use program to
remove unwanted parts.
Suggestions?

==============================
It won't split if you uncheck "Create clips
for video files" on the import screen.

Once you have the movie imported...
drag it to the timeline and make as many
splits as you want. (Info on splitting pasted
below)

If you are unhappy with Movie Maker...the
following freeware might be worth a look..
it has several editing options:

iWisoft Free Video Converter
http://www.easy-video-converter.com/index.html
(Win2000, WinXP, Vista, Win7)

iWisoft Free Video Converter Tutorials
http://www.easy-video-converter.com/tutorial.html

Here's another freebie that will split the video
into managable segments:

VidSplitter
http://www.geovid.com/VidSplitter/

And if you want a more advanced program...
you might try the trial version of Cyberlink Power
Director:

Cyberlink PowerDirector
http://www.powerdirectoronline.com/

"Splitting A Clip In MM 2.1"

Drag the video/audio clip to the
Timeline.

Play the video/audio by clicking the
"Play" button under the view screen.

You will see the Playback Indicator
(vertical line) advancing across the
timeline.

Click the "Pause" button at the point
where you wish to split and type...
Ctrl+L or click the "Split" button at the
bottom of the view screen.
(you can also make adjustments by
dragging the Playback Indicator)

Make as many splits as you want and
remove the unwanted clips by right
click / delete.

And...Movie Maker 2.1 only displays every
other frame. In order to see all frames, the
following info from PapaJohn may be useful:

===

Movie Maker 2 shows you every-other-frame
when doing project editing. MM1 and Movie
Maker in Vista show you each frame.

It's usually not a problem when skipping over
the in-between frames, but sometimes you
notice a flickering frame in a clip that is a 'stray',
and you can't see or cut it out.

If you apply the Slow - Down - Half video effect
to a clip in the timeline, you are then seeing
each frame rather than every other one. You
can see the problem frame and split it out.
Then remove the effect from the clip to return
it to normal.
