Sony laptop PCG FX250 with WinXp home edition.
Laptop not reading added memory. I added a (Valueram
kvr-pc100so/128-r)memory card into the second slot. The first slot still has
the factory memory card (Hyundai pc100u-222-620). My laptop is only reading
one of the memory cards. I have swaped cards, inserted only one card into
each slot. It still only reads 128meg. Both memory cards are good. Both will
boot the system from either slot 1 or 2. For some reason when I have both
cards intstalled it only reads one of them. The computor will not show
256meg.

Thanks

Doug

It's absolutely essential that any new RAM module(s) be fully
compatible with both the motherboard and/or any other RAM module(s)
already in the system. Additionally, there are sometimes jumper
switches on older motherboards that need to be reset for new RAM
configurations. Consult your motherboard's manual or the
manufacturer's web site for specific instructions and compatibility
requirements.

There response was pay us $19.95 per call. There email response was
automated and told me how to install the memory. Sony was no help.

I think the PCG FX 250 will use that much memory, but I'm not sure. Did you
check to see if it will handle 256 M? Also, XP does not like mixed memory;
that may be your problem.

PCG FX250 can use 256meg in each slot. But I think your right about XP not
liking mixed memory. I put this memory in about 2 years ago with WinMe. I
changed XP about 8 months ago and did not check the memory for the 256Meg
after installing XP. I just happened to look at the memory this morning and
noticed it was at 128Meg.
I cant find a site that tells me what brand memory are compatible with each
other.

Doug, I would try to find another module exactly like one you already have
so you would have a matched pair. www.crucial.com will tell exactly what
type memory you need, but, of course, they won't list any brand except
theirs (which is top quality). I have two 256 M modules in my Sony laptop.
XP likes it, works great!
