Help with Journal Wrap error

We have an Active Directory with Windows 2000 SP4 on all DCs.
There are 6 DCs in the domain.
Only one of the DCs has the JRNL WRAP error condition.
I have researched MS articles and the newsgroups, and I understand that to
resolve this, I need to set the BURLFLAGS entry to D2 on the server with the
problem (to trigger a non-authoritative restore)....However, I am not clear
as to whether or not this is the only step I need to take....Do I need to
specify the "parent object" as well?
Here is my understanding of how to resolve this issue:
1) Stop NTFRS service on the DC with the journal wrap error.
2) On the DC with the error, change the BURFLAG registry entry to D2.
3) Start the NTFRS service.
Please let me know if there is anything else I need to do to resolve this
issue. Thanks.

the steps are correct....

however... if the DC where you are going to do the D2 is the only in its
site, that means the DC needs a DC in another site as a source for the
SYSVOL.
SYSVOL replication uses AD replication for its schedules. So if you do the
D2 while the replication is not open, the SYSVOL will stay unavailable until
the schedule opens.
For this you have three possibilities if the schedule is tight and the DC is
the only one in its site:
(1) wait until the schedule open, THEN do the D2
(2) see: http://blogs.dirteam.com/blogs/jorge/archive/2006/05/12/956.aspx
(3) Do the D2 and just wait until the schedule opens (not recommended)

Thank you for your comments.
Yes, good point...this is indeed the only DC in this site. How do I specify
the source from another site? Is this where the parent object registry entry
is used?

Or, do I need to specify one of the other DCs as a "BURFLAGS=D4" server?

....continued thanks!

Yes. I read the article and it was not clear what steps to apply given my
specific situation, thus, my question to the newsgroup......Could you please
answer the followup question?

what is it that you don't understand?
this is the answer:
-----------------------------
a.. Stop the NTFRS service
a.. Open Command Prompt
b.. NET STOP NTFRS
a.. Execute the CMD file mentioned below
a.. SYSVOL_Seeding_1_CONFIG.CMD (contents - copy/paste - enter own
information!!!!)
a.. REG ADD
"HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtFrs\Parameters\SysVol
Seeding\Domain System Volume (SYSVOL share)"
b.. REG ADD
"HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtFrs\Parameters\SysVol
Seeding\Domain System Volume (SYSVOL share)" /v "Replica Set Parent" /t
REG_SZ /d <FQDN SOME DC WITH HEALTHY SYSVOL> /f
b.. REMARK:
a.. <FQDN SOME DC WITH HEALTHY SYSVOL> is the upstream partner (e.g.
DC.DOMAIN.LOCAL) that is used to source the SYSVOL from if the registry IS
specified
a.. Start the NTFRS service
a.. Open Command Prompt
b.. NET START NTFRS
a.. Execute the CMD file mentioned below
a.. SYSVOL_Seeding_2_REMOVAL.CMD (contents - copy/paste!!!!)
a.. REG DELETE
"HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtFrs\Parameters\SysVol
Seeding\Domain System Volume (SYSVOL share)" /v "Replica Set Parent" /f
b.. REG DELETE
"HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtFrs\Parameters\SysVol
Seeding\Domain System Volume (SYSVOL share)" /f
a.. Go to the SYSVOL location (NET SHARE to find out where)
a.. See if the "Policies" and "Scripts" folder appear
a.. See if the DC advertises itself again (FRS log)
a.. --> Event ID 13565 and 13516 in the "File Replication Service Event
Log"

your "answer" (as well as the article/post) states "....right after the
non-auth restore AND the reboot of the DC (if applicable)...."

I do not know how to perform the non-auth restore that is described in this
step, which seems to be a required first step....I do appreciate your attempt
to help. Sorry, I know this may seem crystal clear to you, but it is my first
time dealing with this specific situation.....

yes you do, it is mentioned in your own previous steps (to which I added one
additional step)

1) Stop NTFRS service on the DC with the journal wrap error.
2) On the DC with the error, change the BURFLAG registry entry to D2.
3) Create the Key "Domain System Volume (SYSVOL share)" and the registry
name "Replica Set Parent" (see post)
4) Start the NTFRS service
5) Delete the Key "Domain System Volume (SYSVOL share)" and the registry
name "Replica Set Parent" (see post)

the information required is mentioned in the KB articles below the post
where you can find tons of info on how to use the D2 or D4 values
