I want to create a document with a watermark saying "DRAFT" across it. I
used Word Help and found precise instructions, which worked well until I got
to "Printed Watermark," and found it greyed out. While I was on that menu, I
remember that "Text Direction is greyed out. How come only the features I
want to use are the ones unavailable to me!?!?

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Printed Watermark is disabled when you are in Web Layout view (which you
will be if you tried Format | Background first). Text Direction is available
only in tables, frames, and text boxes.

Ach, if it were a snake . . . but how am I supposed to know that!?!? I
really don't understand all these views. I more or less want WYSIWYG - is
there a default I can set? Many thanks for the post!

BTW, on the text direction, I wanted to print vertical numeric labels for
notebooks (simple, 1232, 1233, 1234) so they were easy to read with bifocals
(old age, you know). Any further advice?

Roses to you for being so kind!

Insert a table, frame, or text box and then use the Text Direction command.

again, if it were a snake - I am an advanced excel user, but novice with
word, so I never use word to do data . . .
