Help With Inserting Toolbar Commands

I wanted to put the Full Screen View command on the Toolbar. I dragged it
and inserted it, but it only shows as text, not as an icon. It says "Full
Screen," with the "u" underlined.
I've put other commands up there before and always gotten the button/icon.
Word Help says this:
a.. A menu command can't be displayed as an icon only, unless you change the
command to a toolbar button. If you select the Default Style option on the
shortcut menu and then copy or move the command to a toolbar, the command is
displayed as an icon on the toolbar.
I can't understand this.
I don't have the "shortcut menu" displayed (or checked) at all.
I've also read in Help that I should be able to click "Modify Selection"
button, but that is greyed out for this--and all other--toolbar command
selections.
I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer here.
Thanks.

Hi JD

I think you're half way there already. Try this: Tools > Customize.
Right-click your newly-created Full Screen View command. Choose "Default
Style" (to have just the button) or "Image and Text" to display, well,
the image and the text.

If you're later prompted to save normal.dot, say yes.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Shauna, but the only thing I get from right clicking the command is
"What's This?"
If I right click the command on the toolbar, I get a dropdown list of
available toolbars.
The "Modify" button continues to be greyed out.

Do you have the Customize dialog open when you're right-clicking on the
button?

Yes, I opened the Customize dialog as per instructions. The right click
gives only a "What's This?"
Are you able to drag the Full Screen command to the toolbar as an icon
rather than as a text command?
JD

It seems to me that there is or used to be a Full Screen button on the
toolbar by default. In any case, when I drag Full Screen from the View
category of Customize to the toolbar, I do get the text display (which is
actually rather unusual), but when I right-click on the button (on the
toolbar, not in the dialog), I do get the menu that includes the "Default
Style" entry.

Many thanks to you and to Shauna. This time I opened the Customize dialog
box, but right clicked on the toolbar rather than inside the the dialog box,
and did get the Default Style option. I was right clicking the command
without opening the customize dialog first.
Now I have a button instead of text. All's well that ends well.
