ms office FrontPage 2003 sp2
win xp pro sp2

I do the following:
1.. Save word file as htm
2.. Import into FrontPage
3.. Insert word.htm into a FrontPage.htm file by using: insert web component>included content>page
The following problem arises when I view the FrontPage.htm file on the www (but not on my HD on the local machine):
1.. In the space into which word.htm should be loaded within the FrontPage.htm file, certain webbot components of the FrontPage.htm file are loaded (e.g., a hitcounter, or navigation bars which may be from shared borders or from other regions of FrontPage.htm).
2.. Word.htm is not loaded into FrontPage.htm. Instead, the filename and directory path of word.htm are shown, but the directory name is duplicated (instead of [directory/word.htm], [directory/directory/word.htm] is shown).
3.. If I select word.htm in the file list view and choose format>shared borders>selected pages>uncheck all shared borders, the behavior us not changed.
Can anybody help me fix this problem?

Thanks,

Clem.

You can't "include" a word file.
It has to be a html file ( web page ) created in FrontPage.

The content that is "included" is what is between the <body></body tags in
the web page.

A shared border on an included page doesn't sound like a good idea.

Steve,

Thanks for your reply.

1, I did not include a word file. I included a word file saved as htm.

2, Why does the included content display as expected on the local HD (disk
based web), but not on the remote server?

Thanks,

Clem.

Rob,

Thanks for your reply.

1, The shared border is not on the included page. The shared border is on
the "host" page (into which another page is inserted; the inserted page is
placed into a portion of the "host" page which is not a shared border).

2, Why does the included content display as expected on the local HD (disk
based web), but not on the remote server?

Thanks for your help!

post the url to the page. it'd be easier to tshoot if people can see the

Rob,

Thanks for writing.

Here is example 1; I inserted the sub-page as a file (insert>file), and this
looks as it should (but it's a pain to do because the sub-page content in
the host page is not updated dynamically as with "insert web
component>included content>page")
http://ohiorepromed.com/info_shg.htm (the sub-page content starts with "Ohio
Reproductive Medicine Patient Information" and ends with the paragraph
starting with "4.")

Here is example 2: same as above, but I used "insert web component>included
content>page" to insert the sub-page:
http://ohiorepromed.com/info_shg_copy(1).htm (garbled sub-page...)

Here is example 3: I actually found one sub-page that displays properly,
even with the "insert web component>included content>page" function (I
compared the sub-pages that don't display properly (e.g. example 2 above)
with the sub-page in 3, but I cannot find the difference...)
http://ohiorepromed.com/info_metformin.htm

Your feed-back is greatly appreciated!

Clem.

Ok, let's backup a second. Why are you using included content here? Is that
content intended to display in *several* different pages and subject to
frequent minor changes? If not, I'm not sure why you are using included page
content.

Rob,

Frequent minor changes; it is easier to simply copy the new version into a
directory and then update the remote web, rather than opening the host file
each time and inserting the file.

Thanks,

Clem.

Clem,

What I'm alluding to is; if you are updating something being displayed on
*one* page then don't use includes at all, there's no reason to, unless that
one page is being displayed within several others within the web.

The double includes can happen if there are missing or unclosed html tags.

What do you mean by; "copy the new version into a directory", you're not
using Explorer to copy files into FP are you? You should always be working
within FP (with your web opened) - Import the file, or drag/drop a file into
FP - then place it into your layout.

ps...I like the logo!

Rob,

Thanks for the comments (BTW, the logo was a patient's idea).

When I update files (which I do frequently), I use drag/drop them into the
appropriate directory in the web via FP, then I update the remote web. The
beauty of the "include" function is that I don't have to open the host
file(s); in fact, I don't even have to remember which the host file(s)
is/are. This saves time!

What is surprising is that some of the htm files created by word work, but
others don't. You say this is due to missing or unclosed html tags. Any idea
how to fix that (in other words, is there some kind of tool to find open
tags or missing tags, and more importantly, how do I persuade word to
include/close all the tags?

Thanks,

Clem.

Actually it's better not to use any of Words formatting, to strip it out
completely...either by Copy/Paste into Notepad, then Copy/Paste into FP or
use Paste Special and dump the formatting.

It's possible that maybe when you're pasting formatted word stuff,
especially if you are saving word stuff as html that you're mucking up a tag
or two. One of the gurus here will have to weigh in on that though...Im not
sure.

Of course you want to make sure you're not including and include in an
include...that's like crossing the streams :-)

|
|
|
Any
idea
| how to fix that (in other words, is there some kind of tool to find open
| tags or missing tags, and more importantly, how do I persuade word to
| include/close all the tags?
|
| Thanks,
|
| Clem.

Rob,

When word converts a doc file to htm, it creates a "head" section which in
this case is about 1700 (!) lines long. If I delete lines 7-874 (but not
8-874 or 7-873), the aberrant behavior stops. However, this is very time
consuming to figure out, so that for now, I'll just use the "insert file"
function.

Thanks again for your help!

Clem.
