HI,

I have got an eMachine 420 with a power unit that has blown. I have connected it up to a new more powerful power unit, and it is working ok. The only problem is, say 2 out of ten times when I power it down and try to re start it by pushing the power button on the front it will not start up. I have to unplug the power unit from the mains to get it to start. Has anyone ever seen this problem before?

Any help would be appreciated

:confused:Thanks

that is symptomatic of an underpowered psu, or one with a timing issue on startup.
Not all supplies of the same rated wattage supply the same amperage on all the voltage rails, and it is possible that one of the rails is not quite up to snuff.

Thanks,

I have compared all the ratings on the new and old PSU. The new one has much higher ratings than the old one. If when the PSU died and it had damaged the motherboard would it still start up??

it does start and run eventually, so it is just a cold start issue.

It's still possible it is a timing issue. I have a board here that will so those exact same symptoms with a 350w psu, but runs absolutely fine on a 300w psu. Rail ratings are almost exactly the same. That is a timing issue in the 350w supply and the mobo, one voltage is not coming up in the time the board expects it, either too early or too late....
While it is possibel the dying psu damaged the board, I would expect it would not work at all if it were truely damaged.
I would try another make of psu.
