My computer is working good, so I am a little hesitant in running the defrag
program. The analysis shows and recommends that I do. Is there anything
that I should be a little leary of by running defrag?
Thanks.

Ensure that you have at least 15% free space on the drive before running
defrag.

Other than that you shouldn't run into any problems unless your drive is on
it's way out. However short of running a diagnostic on the drive there isn't
anyway to tell if that's the case. If the computer is running good though it
is unlikely the drive is dying.

In order to keep your computer in tiptop condition, you must defrag on a
regular basis but I would not use windows defragger, there is Diskeeper
Lite on the net, and it works great.. doesn't take hours to do either..

Hi eepp:

Defragging in XP is trouble-free. However, if you have not backed up for a
while, now would be an excellent time. Also, before you de-frag, at least
run the Disk Cleanup utility: Start > All Programs > Accessories > System
Tools.

This is also an excellent time to do a little manual housekeeping: select
and archive-to-CD any programs or data you use very rarely or never and then
delete them from the hard drive before de-fragging.

De-frag can take some time, so invoke it (or schedule it), at a time when
you won't need the computer for a while. It CAN be interrupted though if you
need to. On a heavily fragmented drive, I always de-frag twice despite the
utiltity's assurance that fragmentation is 0% after the first pass.

Good luck

In addition to the sound suggestions from Callmark, I find DiskClean-up can
be slower than Defrag.
I, as a rule, work off-line, pull the plug on net connection, disable
antivirus(in partic Mcaffee) - that tends to speed things up sometimes.

No. Defrag can take awhile though, so it's often an advantage to
defrag often. Do it weekly and it'll probably always be fast
unless you have added/deleted a lot of files all at once.

One thing to watch: If free disk space gets to 15% or less it
can have problems doing a defrag and will issue warnings.
Otherwise it's reliable; never lost so much as a bit of a nibble
of a byte<g>.
