Gina and Neal

Hello, we have been receiving so many notices for
critical and needed updates. We went to the update site
and it told us that we needed 36 updates but we could not
differentiate which ones to download for our computer.
Example: there was one for what seemed to be for a
business using multiple computers and others listed words
we are unfamiliar with when it comes to computer
programs/systems etc. Does anyone know which are the
best, current or most important ones to download? We are
afraid that we will take up alot of space using too many
downloads and neither of us has days worth of time to
wait for all to download. If we are wrong for only
choosing a few, let us know. We know this sounds
confusing but from those of us who are a little
uneducated with computers it is upsetting when Microsoft
doesn't have a simple address to e-mail questions without
getting sent to product manufacturer pages. Any help
would be appreciated. Thanks

Go right for the critical updates (which Windows Update
does by default). Do not pass go, do not collect $200. The
critical updates patch your system against known viruses
and weaknesses in the operating system.

Yes, it takes a while. Yes, you'l have to download some,
reboot, then download some more. But I can't stress the
importance of patching your system; not just for the
protection of your computer, but for the protection of
others. Some of those weaknesses can turn your system into
a zombie, searching out other machines to infect.

If you have other questions, feel free to drop us another
line. In the meantime... make sure you're behind a
firewall!

Best of luck!

Every once in a while, PC-magazines and the likes have a CD attached with
"official" Microsoft Windows (and Office) Updates. Next time you go shopping
or walk by a bookstore check for those magazines and look what's on the CD.
That way you can install the latest Service Pack much easier than
downloading it. Obviously you won't get the very latest patches, which I
recommend you still download (at least the critical ones).
And by the way, on those same CDs you'll find lots of freeware and
shareware - sometimes even usefull stuff like Spybot or Adaware etc.
