I've got a W2K local domain network. The DC runs DNS. I
installed this by following the wizards, and I created a
forward and reverse lookup zone and enabled forwarders to
our ISP.

The network seems to work fine - everyone has internet
access etc. BUT..my W2K client's application event logs
are full of userenv errors: event id 1000: Windows cannot
determine the user or computer name (1722)

I've researched this event and see it's usually caused by
misconfigured DNS. However, those clients definitely have
DNS pointing to the DC, and can access the internet.

If I run NSlookup I get "Cannot find server for address
xxx.xx.xxx.xx. Non existant domain"

I've done some research and see various messages about
adding hosts and pointers to DNS but I'm not sure exactly
what to do. When I try to add a host to DNS I get a
message about it not being possible because the reference
in the reverse lookup zone is missing.

Can anyone tell me exactly what I need to do to solve this
niggle?
Thanks

These are two completely different errors caused by two different things
1. > If I run NSlookup I get "Cannot find server for address

This error is caused from either not having a reverse lookup zone configured
or an iproperly configured reverse lookup zone. You can ignore this if you
want or configure a reverse lookup for the IP you have listed in TCP/IP
properties for DNS.

2. > The network seems to work fine - everyone has internet
access etc. BUT..my W2K client's application event logs

This error is a binding error and can be fixed with taking these steps on
the server.

1. Make sure DNS is listening only on the private IP address in the DNS
server properties on the interfaces tab.

2. Go in to Control Panel to the Network and Dial up Connections CP, then in
the Advanced Menu click on Advanced Settings, make sure your private
interface that has DNS listening on it is at the top of the Connections and
that File and Printer Sharing and Client for Microsoft Networks is bound to
TCP/IP and that IP is at the top of their binding order if you have multiple
protocols installed.
