help with desktop

I have a compaq 5320us with windows xp. Every time I try to
open a icon on my desktop the page goes blank for about 20
sec and then returns to say Active Desktop Recovery. I
tried a few thins including adding spywar and cleaning up
files any help would be appreciated.

Try the System File Checker with
SFC /scannow
via Start > Run.
