Help with desktop please

Is there a way for XP pro to scan for win based programs and create
shortcuts on my desk top similar to win 98. Add or remove programs won't
allow me to do anything but remove programs.
 
I don't recall Windows 98 having such a feature but XP does not. You can
either find the applications exe and create a shortcut to it or reinstall
your applications. Often, setup has an option to create a desktop shortcut.
