Hello everybody. I'm having trouble burning CDs at a slower speed with
my NEC drive. I have used three different types of media on three
different burning programs (Nero 6, DiscJuggler, Alcohol) The lowest
speed I can achieve is 8x.

Is there some firmware I need to update to get 2x? I've tried changing
options in all the programs and nothing works..

Thanks

Hi,

I don't have Nero 6 installed anymore but I do remember that one has the
option to choose the speed that one burns the media. Look closely at the
options before burning and you should be able to choose the speed.

I wish it was that obvious, but it's not under the burn settings in
the preferences or whenever you go to burn a disc. It's the same with
all the other programs.

Hmmm ... I have no trouble with Roxio CD-Creator in changing burning
speeds. Sometimes the program won't allow writing at full speed; but I
think usually that's because it find that the CD-type is old and doesn't
support full speed writes. (I've had some CD-ROM blanks around here a
LONG time.) But it always will allow going slower.

Sometimes the file won't transfer at the highest rated speed too; but
I've still had no problems with the disk recording ... It just reports a
slower actual recording-speed than the specified one.

Still having the same problems. Everything will burn up to 48x with
some memorex discs I have. I have also tried to other brands, still
nothing.

I also have a NEC 3550a and had no problems burning at low speed,
including 2X (I assume you want the lower speed to prevent errors?).
Have you ever been able to burn at lower speeds? Have you tried
different burning software? I dumped Nero and was a free program
called FinalBurner.

If no other SW works perhaps you have a defective burner.

I've tried three different programs. Each once only burns at 8x. :(
