I have a full backup (with system state) from ntbackup.exe of a Windows 2000
domain controller.

What is the preferred method to to the full restore on the boot volume?

Any help appreciated.

Thomas

Thanks for the response. However, I'm not looking to reinstall Windows, I'm
looking to restore my existing backup. There is only one volume in the
backup, so it's the system/boot volume. Is there a preferred method to do a
full, bare-metal restore on a boot volume?

Thomas

Hello ThomasMc07,

To use a backup with ntbackup create you have to prepare the server with
a 2000 server installation with the same SP and patch level and also applications
on it. Then the backup should not interfere with the current setup.

Not with NTBackup.

I'm not sure I'm following you. Are you saying that I need to install Windows
2000 Server and then do the restore right over the current running copy of
the OS? It this possible? What about over-writing the registry?

Hello ThomasMc07,

If you use a full server backup with ntbackup created you need of course
the same OS version that provides you again with ntbackup. Check the article
how to do it complete.

The article doesn't say anything about how to restore the original OS,
applications, etc. That's what I need to do. Otherwise, there is no reason to
use the backup.

Is it possible to restore the original OS with ntbackup?

Hello ThomasMc07,

Insert the installation disk in the server and follow the installation part,
so when you installed the server the 1st time. Then install SPs and patches
etc. Now you cna use the article.

NTBackup *cannot* do bare metal restores. Install a basic Windows 2000
installation then restore the backup over the installation, that is the
only way to do this with the NTBackup utility.

Ok, thanks for the info. I thought I was covered with ntbackup, but I guess I
was not. It seems like there would be a set of problems trying restore over a
currently running OS. Is there anything is particular that I should know? For
example, what about OS-locked files? What about hardware drivers? What about
the event logs? What about NTFS ACLS? Will this method restore services to
there original state?

Should I run the restore in safe mode?

Thanks,

Thomas McLeod

For a domain controller you need to start the computer in directory
services restore mode, that is explained in the links supplied in
earlier responses. NTBackup backs up and restores NTFS permissions and
ACLs.
