Help with . ASX stream file type, please

I have a w2k machine with MS Media player version 6.4.09

When I try to open a URL with a .asx filetype MS media player starts
and then I get the following error message.

The file format is invalid. (Error=8004022F)

I'd appreciate a hint on fixing this.

Open media player and click on tools and then on options. Choose the file
types tab and see if windows media file (asf) is checked. If it is checked
but looks dark behind the check, check it again. It needs to be white behind
the check. Click on ok and go try and play the file again.
