"Windows" sounds are coming out of the internal PC speaker.
However when I go to the Control Panel to test, the sound comes
out of the external speakers just fine. I've updates the sound
drivers, that didn't help. I'm at a loss. Anyone ???? Thanks.

Example: from Mailwasher v3.3, a beep from the internal speaker,
instead of my email .wav. But Eudora Pro (paid mode) will sound
the appropriate wav out of the external pc speakers for each
email account.

Also no startup or shutdowb sounds at all...from int. or ext.
speakers.

I remember on old Compaqs there were similar probs with the mobo speaker
being enabled in the BIOS, have you checked there? Also, I suggest you
verify that you have current drivers, visit the mfg website.
