My 1ghz computer broke. I have a 40 gb Western Digital hard drive in it. I
have a 586mgz computer with a 2gb Western Digital hard drive. I want to put
the 40 gb hard drive in as a second drive in the 586. Do I have to change
the jumpers on both drives? I changed the jumper on the 40gb to slave. The
jumper on the 2gb is set on single drive. When I put the 40gb in the 586
Bios reconizes both drive but then locks up and won't boot. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Yes change the jumper on the 2Gig to Master. WD is
the only maker that used master, slave and single jumper
settings.

The BIOS of your older computer's motherboard will not recognize a harddrive
of the 40GB size. It's too large. You either need a BIOS update, if one is
even available, or you need a much smaller harddrive replacement.

He just said that it IS being recognized.

1. He may already have that BIOS update.

2. The drive might be recognized as a smaller size than its optimum
size. He might be seeing it as a 32 gig drive.

3. A lot depends on how the BIOS is configured. Don't forget...the
BIOS is that area where YOU can tell the computer what size drive you
have. You don't hafta used the 'auto' feature.

I think he just needs to change the jumper settings on the one drive
to 'master'.

Changed the jumper but same thing happend. Went to Bios setup and
changed the Auto setting to a 40gb size drive ( had 3 different 40gb hard
drive settings ) and it worked. Just for my infomation, why didn't the Auto
setting detect or set the proper parameters? Thanks to all for the help.

The technology of the drive is probably newer than your BIOS...so that
auto-detect doesn't recognize the drive. This is a quick
answer...with a lot of detail omitted for brevity.

The BIOS is an area where YOU tell the COMPUTER what kind of hardware
you have...and how you want it configured...even if it may not be
correct and match the actual hardware. If the BIOS can possibly do
so, it will accept the information you give it...even though it may
not be correct.

For instance, you could probably find the proper specs for a 20 gig
drive...and put that into the BIOS. The machine will probably
recognize it as a 20 gig drive...and it'll run accordingly.

In the same manner, you can tell the computer that you don't HAVE
hardware installed...which may actually be connected. For instance,
you can tell the BIOS that you don't have a floppy drive...or even a
hard drive.

Glad you got the problem solved.
