HELP!!! "Windows is starting" message wait forever

J

JACK LING

Hi,

This is the 2nd round this week that I've to restore my
Windows XP OS from my Ghost backup image.

The Windows just show "Windows is starting ..." message
and wait there forever.

I've tried to press F8 when boot up, use Last Known Good
also same.

Can go to Safe mode, but find no error in control panel->
device manager. No special message on Event Log as well.

No virus detected scanned with Norton anti-virus.

When the 1st round I experienced the problem, I had the
hybernation mode & sleep mode turned on.

After the problem, I've already turned that off. But this
problem comes again the 2nd time.

Pls guide me why is the problem, and how to diagnose
this. I don't know when and in what circumstances the
problem will come back again.
And then I've no choice but revert back to Ghost backup
image again.

thanks,
jackling.

If you keep doing the same thing and it keeps not working, then
something else is wrong. It is hard to give you a specific answer
without seeing your machine, but I'd want to run some hardware
diagnostics. Here are some generic hardware troubleshooting steps:

For hardware issues - 1) open the computer and run it open, cleaning out
all dust bunnies and observing all fans (overheating will cause system
freezing); 2) test the RAM - I like Memtest86 from www.memtest86.com -
let the test run for an extended (like overnight) period of time -
unless errors are seen immediately; 3) test the hard drive with a
diagnostic utility from the mftr.; 4) the power supply may be going bad
or be inadequate for the devices you have in the system; 5) test the
motherboard with something like TuffTest from www.tufftest.com. Testing
hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts with
known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a good local
computer repair shop (not a CompUSA or Best Buy type of store).
