I am using Windows Explorer (XP) to edit scanned pictures in one
subdirectory. I use 'thumbnails' for the view option

I find that when I rename pictures, that the filenames under the
thumbnail pics get all mixed up. That is, the file name is incorrect
for the pic.

Why is this?

Young,

It sounds as if you have a corrupted thumbs.db file for your photos. Try
the following.

Go into the folder that is having this problem.
Change the view to a non thumbnail view. (View - Tiles.)
Tools - Folder Options - View - Uncheck "Hide unprotected operating system
files (Recommended).
Click Ok.
Delete the thumbs.db file in that directory.
Change the view back to thumbnail (View - Thumbnails).
Tools - Folder Options - View - Check "Hide unprotected operating system
files (Recommended).

This should correct your issue.

Thx,
Nico

Weird! Thanks! It seemed to fix my problem. The mismatching has
disappeared.

My Tools - Folder Options - View - "Hide unprotected operating system
files (Recommended) was unchecked, so I first went to the 'tiles' view
and deleted the .db file. Then returned to the 'thumbnails' view
which re-created the .db file. My filename-image mismatch still
occurred (I did note that the .db file was re-created with today's
date/time). But, and I do say but, when I then went to
Tools - Folder Options - View - and checked "Hide unprotected
operating system files (Recommended), the mismatching disappeared.
I can only hope it stays that way. It has been confusing, and forced
me not to use thumbnails, which I really liked.
