I turned my laptop on and there was a white and black vertical 1 inch block
going down the screen. I'm able to use all the functions, but it's
frustrating because I can't see anything behind it. How can I fix this?

THanks

Video adapter chip has likely failed. This is a mainboard replacement.

Thanks Q. I try talking to the support people about it and they tell me it's
a software problem, but I don't thinks so. I think it's a warranty issue.
Hardware is covered, software isn't. I bought the 700m inspiron back in
September. Everything is brand new. I didn't expect anything not to work so
soon.

Call them back and insist. This is a hardware problem, not a software
problem.

Malke,

What can I tell them to prove it's a hardware problem. Is there certain
terminology I should use? Because I described the problem and the rep just
kept insisting it was a software. If you can, tell me of a better way to
describe the problem.

Thanks

A good and quick way to tell if something is a hardware or software
(Windows) problem is to boot with a different operating system such as
Knoppix, a Linux distro that runs from cd. If things work perfectly in
Knoppix, you then know that indeed something is wrong with Windows. If
you get the video problem in Knoppix, then you know it is hardware.

Here is how to make a Knoppix cd - To get Knoppix, you need a computer
with a fast Internet connection and third-party burning software.
Download the Knoppix .iso from www.knoppix.net and create your bootable
cd. Then boot with it.

What do you see when you boot the computer. Do you see the BIOS info. That
is any writing at all appear on the screen? If all you see is white box you
know it is hardware. If you see words scrolling past during boot the
hardware is OK.
