I have tried to build a new system. I have used 2 different board 754
sockets. Two different power supplies, 2 different dimms and cpu. My
system will only spin the fans, but will not post.. Is my case
shorting out the boards. The board is sitting on brace spacers.

Please help. I have never had a problem like this before.

I assume it is my case and me? However, I have buildt many a system an
never had this

Try clearing the CMOS battery jumper. The CPU fan must be plugged into the
right connector and have a working sense line.My best guess as to why no
boot is incompatible RAM.

alone? No ground screws whatso ever? take the board out of the case and
bench test it.

Its been a while since I buildt a new system. I did not connect the 4
prong 12v and the 24 power lines. I did not realize I needed both
pluged in. It posted after that. I installed gentoo. I let it run for
12 hours. Then I shut it off. I rebooted and it would not post again.
I cleared the cmos, nothing, I let it sit, noting. I switched the
power supply for another unit. 450 w vs 400 and it posted.

Question, can a power supply fail so soon? if i have the problem again.
I will change the ram.

Since the system booted up and was able to run Linux after replacing the
PSU, that would lead to the conclusion that there may have been an issue
with the previous PSU. The PSU could have "failed", as you say, or more
likely, just doesn't have sufficient juice running each independent voltage
rail in order to run your installed components reliably. It's much more
important to use a PSU from a respected manufacturer with enough voltage on
independent rails than just going by the listed wattage of a PSU. Since we
don't know the actual make/model of the PSU you're using, nor the actual
components in your system beyond the chipset, more specific recommendations
can't be offered. Your symptoms do point to the PSU and/or memory being the
most likely culprits.

Run some test passes of Memtest in order to check out your memory. You can
download a bootable floppy or CD creator from http://www.memtest86.com/.
Good luck to you, and let us know how things work out.
