Hi all

I recently bought a WD Raptor 36Gb 10000RPM SATA drive which role is to
function as OS drive in my system. I have done a fresh install of Windows XP
SP1 on the drive which works super. The HDD is attached as Primary Master on
my onboard SATA controller (SIL 3112) on my Abit NF7-S Version 2 (bios 1.1).

Besides the Raptor I have two WD PATA drives as well which functions as data
drives. One is a WD 100GB SE and the other a WD 120GB SE.

I have downloaded the latest version of Western Digital Data LifeGuard
Diagnostics. It correctly detects all of my three drives and there is a
green tick at SMART status.

However, when I run "Quick Test" it randomly reports errors on my SATA
drive. In 3 out of 10 test runs it has reported the following error:

"03- Read SMART Attribute command error on drive3!"

Thereafter the program launches a WD homepage saying its an errorcode 0199
and the drive should be replaced.

A funny thing though is during the test the drive sounds like a car
accelerating up and down. It never sounds like that during normal operation,
but it probably has to sound like that.

However my drive has worked flawlessly ever since setting up and running
WinXP. Everything runs smooth.

How should I react to this error?

BTW I have sent an email to WD Tech support but haven't heard from them yet
(sent an inquiry last week).

Sounds like the butterfly test (seeks from outside to inside, all cylinders,
one at a time, i.e. cylinder 0 to cylinder max. then cyl. 1 to cyl. max.-1,
2 to max.-2, etc. etc., until they meet in the middle and then back again.
It never sounds like that during normal operation, but it probably has to

Given that specific error I would wait for a later revision of the diagnostic.

What does this mean? That the problem lies with the Lifeguard diagnostic
program = causing random bad test results?

It works super to me. In the mean time I have got a response from tech
support at WD saying I should replace my drive. Hmm... for now I will just
wait and see how the Raptor performs.

Thanks for your response.

Nothing, just a possible explanation for your "funny thing".
That the problem lies with the Lifeguard diagnostic
program = causing random bad test results?

AFAICT, it only complains about not being able to read a S.M.A.R.T.
attribute or that that command itself is bad.
It may just be a timing problem that only shows up with the Raptor.
diagnostic.

It works super to me.

Then why are you here?
