Plan the partitioning of the drive for security, stability,
ease of reconstruction and use.
I like to have a partition for the operating system and
application files, another partition for data (My Documents)
and a partition for downloads and multi-media files.
What you do will depend on what type of media you have for
the OS and your applications. Do you have real MS XP CDs?

I would prefer to do a clean install of the OS and
applications that I want and leave all the programs that I
don't want (Real Player etc) out. Then I would set up the
system to save the files where I wanted (TweakUI is good for
doing this).
Then I would install the original drive as slave and copy
the data files to the appropriate partition. It is a good
time to get the folder tree cleaned up.
There are some articles on TechTV (
www.techtv.com) on howto
stuff such as this.
Other good advice from the MVPs sites and Google can be your
friend if you use a clear search term.
Take your time.
