For the past couple of weeks, every time I try to run a virus scan, including
this new beta online, my computer crashes about halfway through. This also
happens with spyware products (lavasoft, spybot, microsoft) or when I try to
run a defrag. I'm sure its a virus, but I have no idea how to remove it.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. sp2 also installed, running xp,

There are anti virus News Groups specifically for this type of discussion.

Dump the contents of the IE Temporary Internet Folder cache (TIF)

start --> settings --> control panel --> internet options --> delete files

Open a Command Prompt.

In the Command Prompt type the following...

CHKDSK C: /F

If it replies..
"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.
Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?
(Y/N)"

Choose - Y

type; EXIT

Reboot the PC.

A full Check Disk will want to be performed, allow it.

After it returns to Windows...

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

It is a self-extracting ZIP file that contains the Kixtart Script Interpreter {
http://kixtart.org Kixtart is CareWare } 4 batch files, 6 Kixtart scripts, one Link
(.LNK) file, a PDF instruction file and two utilities; UNZIP.EXE and WGET.EXE. It will
simplify the process of using; Sophos, Trend, Kaspersky and McAfee Anti Virus Command
Line Scanners to remove viruses, Trojans and various other malware.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

Can you perhaps provide some tech assistance - aol said virus but I use AVAST
anti-virus and doubt it is a virus. Seems I have an anonymous interactive
user. I have Local Network Service and Network Service but have NO NETWORK. I
use a modem to dial up to the internet specifically to avoid hacking.
I fight for justice for children and families in a corrupt judicial system.
I live in Silicon Valley and feel some judge or lawyer or the like has hired
a techie wizards to ...mess... with my system so i can't be efficient in my
assistance to those who have been squished like bug by corruption in the
courts.
I would like to send someone screen prints and event viewer messages i have
saved - someone who might know about this kind of thing and is able to deduce
the reality from system messages.
Can you please help me David?

Carey,
Thank you for your reply. I looked at one of the links you suggested.
However, I need someone to specifically look at the information I have
documented and saved to give me a better clue where to start or what is
really happening. Is this possible?

Nothing anyone tells you will allow you to go after the people that may
have messed with your computer, but it's more likely that you
compromised it yourself.

Do you have DSL/Cable? If so, do you have a NAT Router between you and
the ISP's modem?

Are you running all the latest service packs?

Are you using FireFox instead of IE?

Are you running as an Administrator type account or a Limited User
account?
I would like to send someone screen prints and event viewer messages i have
saved - someone who might know about this kind of thing and is able to deduce
the reality from system messages.

It's not going to really matter what the specific problem is as long as
you get it cleaned, since nothing anyone does here will stand up in a
count/legal system. Screen shots can be doctored, etc...

Always remember - only download files from Trusted Sites.

The following links will take you to vendors sites for Spy Ware / Ad
ware
removal tools and also for Antivirus tools. After you install any of
these applications and update them, run them in SAFE MODE to allow
them to properly clean your system.

These sites are for downloading Anti-Spyware tools, in order that I
would use them myself:

AdAwareSE can be found here:
http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/

SpyBot Search and Destroy can be found here:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

HiJack can be found here:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Ewido Security Suite Trial can be found here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

CrapCleaner can be found at the vendors site here:
http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp

CleanUp can be found at the vendors site here:
http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/download.html
or from another reputable source:
http://www.tucows.com/get/405276_152071

The following are two links to Antivirus software in order that I would
use them:

You can also download Symantec Trial version of their Antivirus software
from here:
http://www.symantec.com/downloads/

Download AVG Personal Free edition from here:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

These are the actual vendors sites, not some unknown or authorized no-
name site. They also don't artificially increase the hits for sites that
get paid for the amount of traffic they can generate like one poster has
admitted to in this group.

A few months back whenever I ran a virus scan or accesed the help files for
my scanner my AV software would crash, sometimes with a BSOD.
Running CHKDSK C: /F as David Lipman suggests in his reply to you cured
the problem. Apparently part of the software was in a bad sector on my HD.

Sometimes it IS the condition of your hard drive.

To eliminate other possibilities,

1. Run Virus Scan in Safe Mode or CleanBoot
For Norton, it's navw32 /l at the Run Box

2. If the scan is successful, then, it might be a virus. Instead of scanning
all local drive at once, try scanning one drive at a time and see which one
causes the shutdown. Go down to folder, the subfolder level to identify which
files are causing the problem.

3. If the scan is not successful, try to run chkdsk /f (the switch is to fix
errors on your hard drive). Once it is complete, run virus scan again.

4. If it is definitely your hard drive (bad sectors, etc.) you might want to
get it replaced and the install spinrite.. Heheheh

All the best!

I am unable to run chkdsk either--computer crashes after a few minutes.
Crashes when I try to run any antivirus scan or any spyware program, in safe
mode or otherwise. Won't defragment, and won't run an online virus scan. I
can browse, run most programs on my computer, play games, etc. Crashes about
halfway through virus scan of c:

Guess I really do have to reinstall the system. If it still doesn't work :((
!

Thanks for your advice.
