I can play my mpeg2 in Windows media player but once I get into Powerpoint when I have set my movie to play automatically it comes up with a green screen or has come up with a jumbled screen that is a composite of the first few frames of my movie. I have tried this presentation on 10 computers and and it works fine. After reading the article on Sonia's website titled "Definition of Multimedia and File Formats I tried to trouble shoot on my own. It was great except I couldn't find several items that were supposed to be with Windows XP such as Windows setup in the add/remove, mplayer.exe and MCI Extensions in the system Registry. I have updated this computer to Windows Media 9 and downloaded the codecs associated with Windows Media 9. The article said that some 3rd party software might cause problems. This computer has a number of viewers that are installed such as e drawings 2003, volo view express, model press viewer 3.0., or another file I found digital voice editor. I think the first 3 are 3D viewing programs as this is the client's computer so I am uncertain as to their application. PLEASE if anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. The operating system is Windows XP and has Pentium 4 CPU, 2.4 GHz, 248 MB of Ram. Thank you in advance for you tim

Couple of things Lisa,

I didn't see what version of PowerPoint you are using. I understand that
you are working off a Windows XP system, but MS Office and PowerPoint
version isn't always the same as Windows version. This is sometimes a point
of confusion. It makes a difference with multimedia.

In Windows XP, "mplayer.exe" is called "mplay32.exe" and should be in the
C:\Windows\System32 folder. MCI information is changed via Start | Run |
Sysedit ** Usual warnings apply ** you are changing very high level system
configuration files **

Lisa,

What Bill said....but also

Start, Run, MSCONFIG

then click the tabs along the top system.ini win.ini

They certainly are, and only the initiated should change them.
In this instance (MPEG2) I'd suggest that there's probably nothing wrong
with the MCI settings.
MPEG2 playback is dependent on a combination of software and hardware; even
though Windows XP allows MPEG2 playback in Media Player, or even though I've
a DVD player installed, I've usually had to rely on a 3rd party MPEG2
decoder for playback in PowerPoint.
www.elecard.com is still the best I know of by far.

Thanks to all that responded and especially to Adam who had the winning solution. Not that the others wouldn't work it was too techinical to follow so I took the easy way out. I am curious though why this file would work on the other 10 computers. They are not all Powerpoint 2003. What specifications of the various computers should I be aware of that might produce this problem with decoding MPEG 2. Thank you again in advance for your time

I'm glad you got it working, Lisa.
I may be wrong but in my experience it's much more likely that machines
won't play MPEG2 without some help from a third party decoder. Even more so
when the operating system is not Windows XP.
That makes me curious too about why your presentation works fine on 10
computers.
