Help - URL opening problem

I have a very unusual problem with the Internet Explorer 6 (Ver. 6.0.2900......)
On the desktop as I click on the 'Internet Explorer', it opens the home page www.msn.com.
Then I can click on the 'Favorites' and click on other saved web addresses, and the pages open without any trouble.
Now, here is the problem : If I copy any URL address from the 'Favorites' and paste the address anywhere on the desktop or any
other place on the disk, and click on it to open, it does not.

How do I get rid of this unusual trouble, so that I can open any saved URL pages directly without going through the Internet
Explorer? Any help will be highly appreciated.

Try this.

Open Windows Explorer | Click Favorites | Click a favorite

Windows Explorer will open the favorite.

Or paste a url in the Address bar and click the Go button or hit your Enter
key.

Hello Wesley,

I have tried your suggestions. Typed http://www.microsoft.com
into the 'Run' command, and clicked 'OK' but it does not execute.
All it says "problem in sending command"

Is there any easy way to re-install only the Internet Explorer 6 in
XP Pro? I am trying to avoid the entire re-installing of the XP Pro
operating system. Thank you for your suggestions.

Orville

P.S. Let me explain a little more about this problem. Personally, I keep
my PCs clean, but this particular problem actually happened to my
next door neighbors PC, who has couple of kids, and they play
with PC all days. They are on DSL. My neighbor called me this
morning and showed me what is happening.

I'm not Wesley, but I'm sure he'd join with me in saying that this
latest information you've provided should have been provided *first*
since it puts the issue in an entirely different light.

Since we have no way of knowing anything about your neighbor's computer,
its virus/malware-status (although with two kids and DSL I can guess
pretty accurately), the best course of action would be for your
neighbor to take the machine to a professional computer repair shop
(not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

Either that, or have your neighbor go through the virus/malware removal
steps here:

Maybe if he posted the correct error message? I wasted time yesterday trying to guess the corrert error message so I could confirm it's zone alarm causing it.

As you can see, I am in a hopeless situation with neighbors PC.
Suggestion was to look for a process to remove malware.
It won't be easy for me but I will post the results as I go through.

Orville

It is probably Zone Alarm. It's not malware. It's anti malware.

But the error you quote seems wrong.

[[There was a problem sending the command to the program]]

I get that error if I stop vsmon.exe and zonealarm.exe and use the Run
command and some other deals, like trying to open a Word .doc. The Word
..docs can be opened from within Word, but not by double clicking. I am
using an old version of ZoneAlarm (v.3.7.211.0). Yes, with the modem
unplugged. I have never received the error with ZoneAlarm running.

If this is the error message and ZoneAlarm is installed...
[[There was a problem sending the command to the program]]

Sometimes you will get the message if ZA has been turned off.
Reboot and make sure ZA is running OK.

I have no idea where I found this

[[There was a problem sending the command to the program

Try doing this,

You will lose all customizations in ZA

1. Go into the Overview Preferences tab and turn off the autostart.
2. Reboot into safe mode.
3. Go into the folder named internet logs (do a search if you don't know
where it lives it varies per OS).
4. Delete everything in that folder.
5. Empty the recycle bin.
6. Reboot into normal windows.
7. Restart ZA manually.
8. Recheck the Autostart.]]

Ask Ramesh - he knows why ZA does it. It's to do with security zones in ZA. But as ZA is a waste of space I've not installed it in XP.

Useless programs like ZA, Nortons, et al have to show something for your money. They also have to add useless features to give a USP (Unique Selling Point). So they integrate at a low level with useless features AND screw up the UI so people can see something they paid for.

One pays money to have one's system degraded with some free bugs thrown in.

In no research on UIs do I ever see users need distractions and pointless information. If ZA was any good one wouldn't even know it was installed.

I don't really care why I get the error on occasion.

I use the Free version of ZA, so everything is a free, useless feature.

BTW, what do you use for a firewall?
