In upgrading to XP I lost the net. I am running a linksys
nc100 10/100 fast ethernet card which my toshiba 100u
cable modem connects to. Everything was fine prior to the
upgrade, now I cannot get to the net. The modem is fine
(spent an hour with my ISP on that), the ethernet card is
recognized by the computer, but there is something holding
the data flow up. I took the modem directly to USB and
even there, I get no flow. For some reason the IP address
is not being requested by my system... it stays at the
windows default 169.###.##.###.

Any thoughts?... Please... this has been two days of
hell.

Are you using IPCONFIG at the command prompt to tell you this? If so, access
the properties for the connection as in step 1, otherwise skip directly to
step 2.

1) Go to Control Panel - Network Connections (you may need to select Network
and Internet Connections first if you are not using Classic View). Find the
connection icon that corresponds to your connection (hopefully there will
only be the one). Right click it and choose Properties. You should be on a
tab called General. Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.
You should again be on a General tab.

2) In that Properties window, does it have the "Obtain an IP address
automatically" option selected? Same for the DNS option below. If not,
select it, then OK everything, and reboot your machine if not prompted to do
so anyway. If it DOES say that... I'm stumped.

Well you didn't say what steps you've taken...

1. Run the Internet Connection Wizzard (control
panel>internet options>settings)

2. Check that your TCP/IP properties in your network
connection are set to Obtain an IP address Automaticaly.

3. Check the network cable (odd chance but it can
happen)...swap it out with a new one...make sure it is
either a crossover or patch depending on what you ISP
equipment requires.

4. From DOS type ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig -a
see if you still have the APIPA 169.etc addy.

Dont have to do those in order...just some different
things I would do to check it out short of unistalling and
reinstalling the NIC.

Kerry,

If you're using a firewall <temporairly> disable it and see if you can
connect. If you can connect then start the firewall back up and you should
be all set.
