Hi all,

I have a newish WD 120Gb drive (8 months old) and I seem to be randomly
getting this windows dialog "unknown hard error" accompanied by a ticking
noise from my HDD. WindowsXP would freeze, I have mouse movement but thats
it. It has happened to me about 5-6 times in the last 2 months. I cannot
replicate the error or cause it to happen again. It seems random, mostly
when I leave the machine on for a while without using it - the PM is
disabled in the bios, and WindowsXP PM is set so that only the monitor turns
off, not the HDD. When my motherboard boots, its registers the HDD SMART,
and its seems to be functioning properly. Is my HDD about to go south? Or
is this a Windows thing? Is my data in jeapardy? or is it a totally
unrelated thing?

Thanks,
William

You might want to try and backup your data. Small
posibility that is might be dying. Is it a master? If so,
WD hard drives (not sure of 100gig+ drives) usually like
no jumpers for master. It really sounds like an
overheating problem might be occuring. Make sure that
there is AMPLE airflow. Put your hand on it after it has
been running and if it seems almost too hot to keep your
hand on there for like 20-30 seconds, move it to a cooler
place. If this doesn't help, contact WD or your provider.
Good luck
