I am running windows XP on the following
Epox 8RDA+ (nForce2 chipset) with older 1400 Athalon
1 gig ram (1x512 + 2x 256) 266mhz
120 gig hard drive + 20 gig HD
Asus video card (nvidia chip)

Everything has been fine over the last year. Then a few days ago the system
would not boot due to a corrupt windows/system32/config/system file. I tried
many things to restore and recover with no luck. I eventually reformatted
the drive (that taught me the need to always backup) and began reinstalling
windows. I had a lot of problems with the reinstall as it would always
lockup near the end of the installation. I tried many different things and
finally noticed that when I lowered the bus speed to 100 (from 133) it
loaded fine.

I restored the bus speed to 133 and began reinstalling other programs and
windows updates. It was fine for a while (about one day) but then began to
lock up again. It also locked up when copying backup file between two the
hard drives Eventually I lowered the bus speed again and the lockups seems
to have left.

Any ideas on what may be causing the lockups. Windows XP problem (I think
not but not sure). Hardware problem? if so is it some faulty memory,
motherboard or processor? Any ideas on how to isolate the problem? Any good
programs to check if a memory stick is going bad?

Any ideas...PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks.

I would start there also pull all sticks and put them back one at a time until it shows up. I would give each stick a good workout.
you may find that after all are reinstalled the issue goes away...bad seating could have been the issue also.
